The origins of Diff’rent Spoons are widely debated. Yes, the title is a combination of Diff’rent Strokes and Silver Spoons, but who actually came up with the idea of a comic based on a family of spoons is unclear.
What is known are the names of the people that executed the grand premise. The brainchild of three giants of comedy, Geof Castle, all-around dynamo and possible super-genius, Ben Grooters, perpetual naysayer, and Nathan Kuruna, the pen behind it all, Diff’rent Spoons is a comic like no other.
Weaned on television, the laugh track-laden strip they create reflects the medium that raised them. A nuclear family, albeit a highly dysfunctional one, is infiltrated by a spoon from the wrong side of the tracks. Watch as he turns this (somewhat) normal family upside down. Though on the surface simplistic, Diff’rent Spoons aspires to the lofty goal of Bamboozled-like social commentary.
Does "Spoons" live up to its ambitious goal of satire and parody? Or is it just kind of stupid? The topic is oft-debated, though both fans and critics can agree on one thing: Diff’rent Spoons is the funniest comic starring spoons that mocks sitcom convention ever created.
Though "DS" means many things to its wide and diverse readership, what they’re all about is best explained in their short, but poignant theme song:
"Diff’rent Spoons, lovin’ each other, lovin’ each other ‘cause they’re crazy ass spoons. Diff’rent Spoons, livin’ together and when they’re together, hijinks ensue."
Truer words were never sung.
—-Geof Castle Co-creator, Diff’rent Spoons
